The beaches in Hikkaduwa have been attracting tourists since the 1960s when it was first discovered. Seenigama Devalaya is a Temple is devoted for Devol Deviyan (God Devol) one of the female good in Sri Lanka. It is located in a small island in the middle of the sea and around is 300 years old. At 160 feet tall, he’s one of the tallest sitting Buddha statues in the world. The name of this sacred place means ‘Mountain Temple’ and was derived because it was built on the crest of a hill near to Aluthgama town. Step inside the temple and you’ll discover it houses a library, museum, and figures of Sri Lanka’s past kings. There’s also Bodhi Tree, thought to be more than 300 years old, and a beautiful stone moonstone, a classic feature of architecture first seen in Sri Lanka’s Anuradhapura Kingdom. Every step into this temple in its most scenic atmosphere feels like the unraveling of a beautiful story.

Madu River safari is a must do ride. The historical name of the wetland was known as “maha dupata ati gangawa” (River with the giant island), later the name was changed and became Madu River. The number of birds, snakes, water alligators makes the safari a bit scary and adventurous. There are around 60 islands of various sizes in the river which turns into more like a lake. The Madu River is very rich in biodiversity. It passes through the wet zone of Sri Lanka opening up into the large Madu Lagoon on its way to the Indian Ocean. You see crab and prawn catching “nets”, plenty of birds, water monitors, mangroves and a cinnamon farm.

From rehabilitation of injured sea turtles to providing a safe nesting ground, the sea turtle hatchery in Hikkaduwa aims at protecting and saving the sea turtles that visit the golden shores of the island. Marked by a number of colorful turtle murals on the outside wall, this beachside facility aims to protect populations of olive ridley, leatherback, green, hawksbill, and loggerhead turtles. The center includes a sandy area where the turtles hatch under small hills, and multiple tanks where you can see the variety of species swimming around. You even get the chance to release some of the infants back into the wild.
