A tragedy happened with this library and it was burnt during the civil war in Jaffna in the year 1981. At this time this library was considered as the biggest library in Asia. It possessed almost 97000 books and manuscript.

Located in the heart of town, the Jaffna Market bustles with crowds intrigued by its interesting goods as well as tasty goodies.
The market spreads along the roads, yet there is also a maze of shops to discover within. Vendors sell fruits, sweet treats and traditional utensils on open-sided pavilions. A great mix of goods can be found here, from apparel, to gold, to food and utensils.
Among the produce are dried fish in all sizes, various products made from the endemic thal or palmyrah and condiments such as sun-dried red chillies in spicy buttermilk.
There are plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables such as the mangoes, grapes, bananas, capsicums, brinjals and onions that Jaffna is quite well known for. The large jackfruits and karthacolomban, a variety of mango native to Jaffna, cannot be missed. It is said that little or nothing of the fresh produce that is delivered each day is left by the time the market closes at six in the evening. Grains and spices abound, whether in small packets or sacks. A common and sought-after spice is the Jaffna curry powder – a rich blend of roasted and ground red chilli, fennel, turmeric, coriander, cumin, fenugreek and pepper – used most distinctly to add flavour to fish and meat curries.
The Jaffna Market is also a great place to buy sweet treats unique to the peninsula. These include peanut biscuits – both vanilla and chocolate flavours, odiyal (palmyrah tuber) and jaggery made from palmyrah sap sold in kuddan – baskets of woven palmyra leaves. Bottles of nelli fruit cordial and grape wine are popular purchases. Hand-crafted household items made from palmyrah, cane and coconut are unique souvenirs.
The Jaffna Market provides a glimpse into life in one of the island’s most iconic towns. It is an experience that is not to be missed.

Casuarina Beach is in Karainagar, Jaffna District, Sri Lanka, about 20 kilometers from Jaffna. The Casuarina Beach in Karainagar is also called and written as Casoorina, Cashoorina and few other variants. This is considered to be the best beach in the Jaffna Peninsula with white sand.
The beach got its name due the Casuarina Trees along the beach.

Stop At: Dambakola Patuna Sangamitta Temple, Madagal, Jaffna Sri Lanka
After Mihindu Maha Thero brought Buddhism to Sri Lanka in 250BC, his sister, Theri Sanghamitta arrived in Sri Lanka with a Sacred Bo Sapling one year later to this port. The temple Samudda-panasala (Jambukola Viharaya) was built commemorating the arrival of the Bo sapling by King Devanampiya Tissa (250-210 BC). Later, the same king planted one of the first eight shoots of the Sri Maha Bodhi, on the same place where he kept the original tree before bringing it to Anuradhapura. King Vijayabahu I (1070–1110) has restored this site. The remains of the vihara, such as the Buddha footprint stone and vatadage seen up to recent times no longer exist there.
This port gradually faded in importance while port Mahathiththa/ Mahathota/ Mantota (now Mantai) located at the mouth of Malvatu oya developed as a key intersection of sea-routes and the Dambakola Patuna Viharaya was lost in time. The Great Chronicle of Sri Lanka, the Mahavamsa and Samanthapaasasdika mention pilgrims coming from “Yonaka” country to Jambukola to worship the Jambukola Viharaya in the ancient times.

Day 2: Delft Island Tour

Delft Island Wild Horses
A wild horse sanctuary is being considered for Delft Island in the Northern Province of Sri Lanka Discussions over a sanctuary on the island, a popular tourist destination, were announced by Sri Lanka Minister of Wildlife Conservation Vijith Vijayamuni Soysa following a meeting with the country’s Minister of Traditional Industries and Small Enterprises Development, Douglas Devananda.
The island is home to about 450 horses, who are believed to descend from horses kept on the island from the time of Delft’s Portuguese occupation.
The flat island is surrounded by shallow waters and beaches of coral chunks and sand. During the dry season water is provided for the horses by the Navy. The island’s area is 50 km² and it is roughly oval-shaped. Its length is 8km and its maximum width about 6km.
Delft’s Tamil name is Neduntivu. It was was named after the Dutch city of Delft by Rijckloff van Goens. He named the eight most important islands in Sri Lanka after Dutch cities, but the seven others now have domestic names.

Delft Island Pigeon Hole
According to historical sources, the Dutch people who was controlling the Delft island at the time (Dutch Ceylon: 1640–1796 A.D.) had used pigeons as an expedient to send messages between the islands, ships and the mainland (Dias et al., 2016). The Queen’s Tower
The Queen’s Tower, also known as Quindah Tower; Tamil: குயிண்டாக் கோபுரம்) is a tower that was built by the Dutch during their rule in Sri Lanka. It is located on the southeastern coast of Neduntheevu, aka Delft Island. It was used as a lighthouse or navigation point by the Dutch and British.

Delft Island Fort
Delft Island Fort locally known as Neduntheevu fort and Meekaman fort are ruins of a fort located on the island of Neduntheevu in the Palk Strait in northern Sri Lanka.
Traditionally attributed to the Karaiyar king Meekaman, the fort was probably built by the Portuguese. Later, it was taken over by Dutch, who built a barrack nearby. The island was known to the Portuguese as Ilha das Vacas (“Island of the Cows”), was renamed by the Dutch as Delft Island.
The fort was constructed out of limestone and coral. Though now in ruins, Ralph Henry Bassett describes the fort as a “very strongly fortified fort” in his book Romantic Ceylon: Its History, Legend, and Story.
