Royal Botanic Gardens Peradeniya attracts approximately 2 million local and foreign visitors annually. The garden includes more than 4000 species of plants, including orchids, spices, medicinal plants and palm trees and is renowned for its collection of orchids and the long, palm framed pathways. It is managed by the Division of National Botanic Gardens of the Department of Agriculture and the National Herbarium of Sri Lanka is attached to it as well. It encompasses a total area of 147 acres.

The Temple of Tooth Relic which is also known as the Sri Dalada Maligawa is one of the most sacred sites of worship, visited by countless numbers Buddhist devotees from all corners of the island. It is believed that worshipping at the Sri Dalada Maligawa immensely improves one’s karma. Located in the royal palace complex of the ancient kingdom of Kandy, this magnificent temple houses the canine tooth which was recovered from the funeral pyre after the Buddha was cremated.

Kandy Lake is an artificial lake which was built by the last King of Sri Lanka and of Kandy, Wikarama Rajasinhe. It was originally built to beautify the Temple of the Tooth and serves as a remnant of the last Sri Lankan Kingdome. This lake is also called “Kiri Muhuda” which means Milky Ocean. This lake has an unfinished wall called the Valakulu Bamma, meaning cloud walls. The unfinished wall has a history attached to it which makes it even more interesting. It remains incomplete due to the arrest and subsequent arrest of the King Wikrama in 1815 by the Britishers. Standing at 2060 feet, the cloud wall remains unfinished even today.

The Commonwealth War Cemetery is a melancholic cemetery which is a resting place for the war heroes who dedicated their lives for Sri Lanka during World War II. This Cemetery is named so not because it is maintained by Commonwealth war graves commission. At the cemetery you will also find tombs of people who met their deaths in Sri Lanka due to sudden climate changes or diseases. This cemetery was actuated in 1817 when the British retained control of Kandy, but was closed in 1870 due to lack of space. The Commonwealth War Cemetery is a lovely colonial find. Visit this place and experience the proud feeling for the war soldiers around the world!
