Stop At: Pidurangala Rock, Pidurangala,Sigiriya, Sigiriya 21120 Sri Lanka

Pidurangala Rock is an almost 200m tall rock that sits to the north of the much more popular Lion Rock .Pidurangala Rock which translates to “offered piles of Gold” is an important place for Buddhists and was first used as a Buddhist monastery. It is believed to date back to the reign of King Kasyapa before the first and second centuries – that’s pretty old! These days, the cave temple / Buddhist temple near the top of the hike is still visited by locals and tourist alike but most visitors come for the spectacular views of the surrounding area and Lion Rock! Getting to the top of the rock is done by hiking along a manmade staircase and path. The rounded-ness of Pidurangala made you feel like you were living on the edge

Stop At: Sigiriya The Ancient Rock Fortress, Sigiriya 21120 Sri Lanka

Sigiriya Rock is an ancient rock fortress known for its massive column of rock that reaches nearly 200 meters high. The site dates back to the reign of King Kasyapa (477-495 AD), who chose this site as his new capital. He decorated the walls with frescoes, and built an impressive palace right on top of the rock column, accessible only through the mouth of an enormous carved lion.The site is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is considered an Eighth Wonder of the World. At a plateau near the top, you’ll come across a giant carved lion, which was once the gateway to King Kasyapa’s palacel. A switchback staircase winds through and within this carved lion, until you reach the top of Sigiriya Rock and can walk amongst the ruins of the ancient palace and soak in the incredible views of the lush green Sigiriya landscape, and beyond.
