Golden Temple of Dambulla being a World Heritage Site, is the largest and best-preserved cave temple complex in Sri Lanka.Spread over five caves, which contain statues and paintings ,these are related to Gautama Buddha and his life. There are a total of 153 Buddha statues, three statues of Sri Lankan kings and four statues of gods and goddesses. Dambulla which was Inhabited by forest-dwelling Buddhist monks since the 3rd century BCE, is an outstanding example of the religious art and expression of Sri Lanka and South and Southeast Asia. The cave shrine, their painted surfaces, and statuary are unique in scale and degree of preservation.
