The creek flows between Deira and Bur Dubai in the city’s historic center. When trade with the outside world began over a century ago, this protected inlet was seen as the ideal place to develop a commercial seaport.
During the last century the creek was widened several times. Today it’s busy with abra, or small wooden water taxis, moving passengers between the souks of Deira on the northeastern bank and the historic district of Bur Dubai on the southwestern bank.
