What to Expect When Visiting New Orleans, Louisiana, United States

Stop At: Cypress Grove and Greenwood Cemeteries, New Orleans, LA

Your first stop will be Greenwood Cemetery, home to some of the grandest above-ground tombs in New Orleans. Your guide will give you an explanation of our unique interment practices and show you some of the most beautiful resting places of New Orleans families, as well as immigrant society tombs, firemen’s benevolent tombs, and a Civil War monument.
In Greenwood cemetery, you’ll visit a Chinese tomb, a wall of tombs of unknown Confederate soldiers, and hear some stories of interesting local characters.

After the tragedy of Hurricane Katrina in 2005, dozens of victims of the storm remained unidentified, so a memorial was built in this 180-year old cemetery to honor them. Your guide will tell you the story of this remarkable cemetery and how the community made it happen.

New Orleans’ Catholic history is the reason behind our unique burial practices, so we will visit a Catholic cemetery established in 1841. Your guide will share some of New Orleans Irish history and you walk among the tombs.

Your guide will share with you how Jewish people keep their faith obligations intact in a Catholic, below-sea level city and tell you some of the stories of some of New Orleans most important benefactors in commerce, charity, and the arts.
