Contrary to what most people think, New York was a pro-slavery place during the antebellum period. Abolitionists, free Blacks and escapees were in a hostile environment. Slave catchers menaced the streets of New York, looking for fugitives but would often kidnap free Blacks men, women, and children sending them south for a life of servitude. Discover Manhattan's many places and the faces of the people who were part of the Underground Railroad. Their selfless efforts helped countless enslaved Africans to break the bonds of slavery.

This tour explores the origin stories of the demographics that would come to play dominant roles in what would become New York City, including the indigenous people, the Christians, Jews, Muslims, Irish, Italians, English, Africans, businesses, real estate agents, artists, peddlers, loners, and dreamers.

Highlights include a view of New York harbor, monuments to early immigrants who defined the metropolis, Wall Street with Federal Hall and the Stock Exchange, Alexander Hamilton's grave at Trinity Church, and Fraunces Tavern, the oldest building still standing in Manhattan.

This unique three-part, 3 hours, walking tour will begin where Manhattan began - at the National Museum of the American Indian. This first leg of the tour will start at Bowling Green, where the first enslaved Africans started building the infrastructure of the city. On the second leg of the tour we will walk up Wall St to Federal Hall, We will end our tour at the African Burial Ground National Monument.
We will cover about 20 of the 80 sites listed in my book - mainly south of the Brooklyn Bridge and east of Broadway. No other tour will give you the insight of this rich African American history, that covers the period of 1625-1865. We will pinpoint the locations where the Africans lived, worked, died, and worshiped. Every step on this tour honors and respects African Americans' contributions and achievements in world history.
